Gamtel eye third-place finish

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 22, 2009
Gamtel head coach, Soulayman Corr, revealed that his side can bounce back from their mid-week 1-0 defeat by Wallidan to beat Samger in their penultimate league match on Saturday to achieve their third-place finish dream in the Gambia Football Association First Division league.

Gamtel, though safe from relegation, have seen their ranking in the 12-team league table dropped sixth position after Wednesday's1-0 defeat against the blue boys. Striker Sainey Touray (Ballack) scored an 83rd minute goal to fetch the maximum points for Wallidan who now moved up to occupy the third place with 30 points, just a point adrift of second-place Samger with two matches remaining for the both sides.

Despite the points difference coach Corr insisted their final league tie against Samger will make a great difference on his team's final position in ranking should third-place Wallidan and Steve Biko, who currently sit fourth, make any mistake. "We are out of the title race but that does not mean that we will relax when we play our final match against Samger on Saturday. We want a good finish and we will achieve this by beating Samger in the weekend and hope Wallidan and Biko drop points," coach Corr who was drafted in to replace politician-cum-coach, Alagie Sillah, at the start of season, told Observer Sports.

The relatively unpopular coach was also disappointed that his side played a good game against Wallidan only to lose the three points. "I am very disappointed that we lost to Wallidan. I think we deserved a point because we played a very a very good game," he concluded.
