Gamtel go top - As Steve Biko drop points

Gamtel leapfrogged Gambia Ports Authority to the top of the Gambia first division league table after a 4-2 win over Sea View on Sunday.

Bonu Johnson’s Ports Authority side were not in action over the weekend as their opponents and eventual CAF Champions League first round causalities, Armed Forces were in Algeria for the return leg of the continental club championship preliminaries. The Telecommunication Boys took perfect advantage of the fixture move to maul the Alagie Sarr-tutored side in a six-goal thriller at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium to temporarily open up a two-point lead at the summit of the standing.

Fellow contenders, Steve Biko, however, failed to capitalise as they could only manage a goalless draw against the ‘draw specialists’ Interior in their Sunday fixture at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda. Though the stalemate result saw Steve Biko consolidate their third spot in the standing, the Bakau giants have fallen four points adrift of leaders Gamtel. In Sunday’s final fixture, Wallidan shared spoils with Brikama United at the Box Bar mini-stadium after a 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested tie.

Earlier on Saturday, Bakau United added to Real de Banjul woes with a narrow 1-0 win at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium. The result, which propelled Bakau United to joint third spot with 12 points, has left Pa Samba Mbenga’s Real de Banjul side rooted to the bottom table with only six points in eight matches.
