Gamtel's lead cut to goal difference

Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Struggling Hawks United did Gambia Ports Authority a huge favour in the Gambia First Division League title race as they held Gamtel to a goalless draw on Sunday, allowing Bonu Johnson’s side to close the gap on the league leaders.

With Ports Authority temporary climbing to the summit on Saturday after a 2-1 win over Real de Banjul, Gamtel knew only a win would have seen them reclaimed their lead by a considerable points. But the Telecommunication Boys’s hopes of re-extending the lead were handed a severe blow when Hawks proved too hard nut to crack.

The stalemate result means Gamtel are now only marginally ahead of Ports, [who also have a game in hand] on lone goal difference with both sides tied at 17 points. Elsewhere, Gambia Armed Forces boasted their hopes for a title defence with a 2-0 win over Samger at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium.

The convincing victory, which came barely a week after the soldiers woefully crashed of out the CAF Champions League at the preliminary stage, has propelled them to third spot in the ranking with 13 points and a game in hand. At the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda, Interior strolled to their second win of the season after a 2-1 win over the dethroned champions Wallidan, while struggling Brikama United also grabbed their first league win of the season with an identical scoreline win over Sea View at the Serekunda West mini-stadium.

The Bakau derby clash between Steve Biko and Bakau United was shifted to the mid-week after their scheduled venue Independence Stadium was set aside for the annual inter-school athletics heats over the weekend.
