Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh was speaking to reporters Thursday after a closed-door
meeting with the Gambian leader. He said:
“We are just a special envoy of President Sherifo Nhamadjo. We brought a
message from him on his plans to visit The Gambia soon. He would like to visit
The Gambia and he is also requesting the support of President Jammeh to help so
that Guineans can come together and dialogue and for his support to help in
certain urgent issues in Bissau.” He added
that they have been receiving unconditional support from President Jammeh in
mediating disputes in Guinea Bissau. The special
envoy also acknowledged that President Jammeh has always considered the
relationship between the two countries as relationship of blood and not
political. Asked about President Jammeh's response, the Bissau envoy revealed that the Gambian leader has assured that he will do whatever he can to help the people of Guinea Bissau who he considers as brothers and sisters. Commenting
on the outcome of the recent meeting on Guinea Bissau convened in Banjul,
Foreign Minister Imbali said the meeting was never a failure, stressing that
the fact that the other parties accepted to come to The Gambia to respond to
the call by President Jammeh is in itself a success. “It was a first step of a dialogue so it was not a failure. Our visit to Gambia can attest to the political will in the first point. I told you that President Nhamadjo has shown the interest of coming to visit The Gambia which is just a sign of readiness to cooperate with The Gambia,” he added. While underscoring the need for peace, security and stability in that country, heused the opportunity to highlight areas of bilateral ties between the two countries and a bond of family and friendship that bind the people of the two nations together.
