Goalless draw sends Ports back to summit

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, March 11, 2010
The Gambia Ports Authority have leapfrogged Gamtel to the top of the Gambia Premier League table after forcing champions Armed Forces to a goalless draw in their rescheduled fixture played at the Independence Stadium last evening.

With the Telecommunication Boys dropping points at weekend after a goalless draw against struggling Hawks, Bonu Johnson’s side knew they will be the new league leaders should they avoid defeat against the soldiers. And the Division One returnees did just that by holding the champions, and in effect, moved one-point clear at the summit of the 12-team league table with 18 points in 9 outings.

The stalemate result, however, saw Armed Forces consolidate their third place in the rankings, but trailing the new leaders by 4 points.
Elsewhere at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium, Steve Biko and Bakau United also settled for an identical scoreline in an intense derby clash.

The stalemate result, which was Steve Biko’s fourth consecutive draw in 9 fixtures, left them lying at fourth place with 13 points, 5 points adrift of leaders Ports Authority, while Bakau United remained at eighth position with 10 points.
