Governor Sanneh: I asked the police to arrest them

Africa » Gambia
Friday, August 03, 2012

The governor of West Coast Region (WCR), Wednesday told the Brikama Magistrates Court presided by Magistrate Abeke, that as the authority representing the president in the region, he asked the police to arrest the people who were causing trouble in Gidda and Talokoto.

Governor Sanneh made this revelation while testifying in a criminal case involving seven people from the said villages. He said prior to that he had sent officials of the Department of Physical Planning and Housing and security officers to the site to put some demarcation on the land, but some of the youths were against that.  He further told the court that when the pillars were erected on the said land the youths went and tampered with them.

The WCR governor said that even though he ordered the two alkalos and elders who know the villages well to discuss the matter, some youths still refused to adhere to the decision, and instead started vandalizing the pillars on the land, which belongs to the government of The Gambia.  As a result, he said, he asked the police to arrest all of them and bring them before a court of law.

At that juncture the case was adjourned to 6 August 2012 for the defence counsel to cross-examine the governor. The IGP was represented by Corporal Jammeh.
