Governor Touray visits CDDP sub-projects in Upper Saloum

Africa » Gambia
Monday, September 06, 2010
The governor of the Central River Region (CRR) Alhaji Ganyie Touray, accompanied by the National Assembly member for Upper Saloum, Hon. Sainey Mbye Wednesday  visited three  CDDP sub-projects in Njau Ward, Upper Saloum, CRR.

The  sub-projects  provided milling machines for the said communities worth overD300,000. Speaking at Lebba Samba Jobe,Baungerr and Ngaje villages, Governor Touray applauded CDDP for their efforts in poverty reduction through community empowerment. He said the milling machines will go a long way in  improving the  livelihood of the beneficiaries and also generate income for them. He seized the opportunity to call on the beneficiaries of the projects to cultivate the culture of maintenance for the durability of the machines. He then donated D1000 to each community to buy fuel for the machines.

The NAM of the area, Hon. Sainey Mbye, noted that the importance of the milling machines cannot be overemphasized as it will reduce  hardship for women who spend longer hours using manual labour to pound their coose. The community development officer of CRR north, Alieu Mbowe, said the sub-projects are CDDP ward projects and urged them to put in place strong committees for the smooth functioning of the projects. He reminded the beneficiary communities that if the machines are properly taken care of, they would serve their intended purposes and also regenerate others. He finally urged them to establish savings accounts for the sustainability of the projects.
