GRCS, NDMA give to NBR disaster victims

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 26, 2010
[endif]The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) and National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) through the North Bank Regional (NBR) disaster management committee of Kerewan, on Friday presented disaster relief materials to 15 displaced families and victims at a ceremony held in Kerewan.

Addressing the affected families, the deputy governor of NBR, Alhaji Abu Njie, thanked the donors (GRCS and NDMA) for complementing government's efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to the affected families. The NBR deputy governor noted that the gesture is a clear testimony of government's commitment in creating an enabling environment for stakeholders to come on board to assist victims in such difficult situation.

Presenting the relief materials to the affected families, Poulo O.N Joof, the regional disaster coordinator for NBR, said the gesture came as a result of the recent flood and windstorm during which many people lost their properties and foodstuff. Joof noted that the presentation also showed the importance the donors attached to humanitarian services. He disclosed that the NDMA provided relief materials which included: rice, oil, sugar, beds, bed sheets, soap and second hand clothings whilst the GRCS also provided mats, buckets, soap, bed nets, blankets as well as second hand clothings.

Ousman C Jallow, the Red Cross branch officer for NBR, echoed similar sentiments and added that the GRCS's ultimate mandate is to support the suffering and help them to effectively participate in national development.

Alhaji Lamin Ceesay, the chairman of Kerewan Area Council (KAC); and Alhaji Tamba Kinteh, the chief executive officer of KAC who doubles asvice chairman of the NBR Disaster Committee, applauded the efforts of the government through the NDMA in their continuous support to disaster victims.Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Kebba Sallah of Jambaya Village in Sabach Sanjal District of North Bank Region, thanked the donors for their benevolent gesture and noted that the support would contribute immensely to addressing some of their basic needs. He used the forum to launch an appeal through the Regional Disaster Management Agency for support in resettlement packages for some displaced families, as they need support to rebuild their houses and settle with their families.
