GRP gives to NBR farmersWednesday, August 25, 2010 The Gambia Rice Project, recently distributed Nerica rice seeds and fertilizer among the farming communities of Busura, Kinteh Kunda, Marong Kunda, Karantaba, Nduren and Jammeh Kunda, all of Central Baddibu District in the North Bank Region (NBR). Speaking to reporters in Njaba Kunda, Sana Singhateh, the agric extension officer for Njaba Kunda area said that farmers from the beneficiary villages have witnessed an increase in the total land cultivation from 730 hectares last year to 1195 hectares of Nerica rice cultivation. He however thanked the Taiwanese Technical Mission and Embassy for complementing the efforts of the president in the country’s drive to the attainment of food self-sufficiency and poverty reduction. Singhateh said that the support of the Gambia Rice Project over the years have encouraged many men to venture into rice production and expressed optimism that the involvement of men would complement the efforts of women in the quest to contribute to food security in many households. He therefore thanked the NBR regional agricultural directorate for their outstanding support and advice towards the implementation of this laudable project and to make farming more lucrative and profitable for the farming communities.
