GTBank outclass Access Bank in Governor Trophy

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, February 16, 2010
GT Bank came from behind to beat defending champions Access Bank 4-2 in the on-going Central Bank Governor Trophy Championship on Sunday.

In a thrilling encounter at the Bakau mini-stadium, the Orange Boys of GTBank demonstrated superiority both in tactics and physic over their opponents. Access Bank first took the lead as early as 3rd minute but GTBank replied with a brilliant equaliser courtesy of Wally Sanneh's close range shot in the 5th minute. Mohammed Conta extended GTBank's tally on the half hour mark with a superb solo effort, but Access showed no sign of giving up as they went ahead to level the scores just ten minutes into the second half.

However the intense pressure on Access Bank mid-way in the second interval  resulted in a penalty when GTBank's stubborn Wally Sanneh was bundled in the 18-yard box after piercing through the porous Access Bank defence line. Lamin Barrow stepped up to covert the ensuring spot kick before Wally Sanneh sealed the tie at 4-2 with yet another incredible individual skill.

The victory placed GTBank on top of Group B with four points in two matches, while Access Bank and Prime Bank sit at joint second with three points apiece. Bank PHB remained rooted at the bottom of the table with only one point after been dumped 2-1 by Prime Bank in the day's other fixture.
