Following the successful conduct of the 19th Delegates Congress held from the 7th to 8th August at the Paradise Suites Hotel and Resort in Banjul, delegates elected into office a new National Executive Committee (NEC) that is charged with the responsibility to direct the affairs of the union for the period 1st September 2009 to 31st August 2014, a press release from the Gambia Teachers' Union(GTU) Secretariat, signed by Marie-Antoinette Corr, general secretary stated.

"In view of the above, I am pleased to inform you that Mr Lamin K. Marong, was duly elected as President. Prior to his election, Mr Marong was the acting 2nd vice president responsible for policies. He replaces Omar J Ndure who had already served his second and final term in office as president," the release concluded.
