Hard labour for KGI generator thief

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, March 10, 2010

The Kanifing Magistrates Court presided over by Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh, yesterday, convited and sentenced Musa Nyang to serve four months imprisonment with hard labour.

The accused pleaded guilty to the offence of stealing a 30kg bag of rice at the Kanilai Group International (KGI), valued at D300. The facts of the case have it that the accused on the 1st March, between 1 and 2pm, went to KGI warehouse in Kanifing and took a 30kg bag of rice. It was one Landing Gibba who alerted the storekeeper that the convict had taken the said bag of rice. When the storekeeper confronted him, the accused failed to give a genuine explanation.

He was arrested and taken to the Kanifing Police Station, where he was cautioned and subsequently charged. Musa Nyang, the convict urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying he is a first time offender and that he will not repeat the act.
