Hawks and Sea View drop to Division Two

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, June 08, 2010
The two relegation spots in the Gambia First Division League table were confirmed on Saturday, with Sea View and Hawks failing to beat the drop despite taking the survival battle right to the penultimate fixtures of the season.

Amadou Baldeh scored a 73rd minute goal for his  relegation-threatened Bakau United side in a win that condemned Sea View to First Division relegation, while Sang Ndong's Hawks 1-0 win over Real de Banjul at the Serrekunda West mini-stadium fell short of ensuring their top flight stay after fellow relegation battlers, Brikama United, prevailed against Samger at the Box Bar mini-stadium on the same day.

Facing a must win clash against Real de Banjul, who were already save from the drop, Hawks were also aware that  their fate does not lie in their own hands as they would also hope for Brikama United to drop points against Samger. And despite achieving their own part of the probability by beating Real de Banjul, the same thing was not to be said of the other fixture at the Box Bar as Brikama United rallied home to force the maximum points out of Cherno Samba Academy boys and in doing so secured their top flight position.

Coach Alagie Sarr's Sea View entered their game against Bakau United knowing that a clean sheet will keep them in the First Division. But facing a side that were also battling to avert crashing to the second tier did not help Sea View's plight. The hotel club could have first taken the lead after 70 minutes but Ebrima Sawaneh shot horrendously wide with the goal at his mercy.  A minute later, Sarr's decision to replace arguably the best player on the pitch, Mamut Saine, was met with disapproval from the crowd and a minute later, the aggrieved supporters were vindicated.

Saine was still making his way to the substitutes' bench when Bakau United's Alagie Bah set up substitute Amadou Baldeh to tap home from close range to the mark the opener. That lone goal separated the two sides throughout the relegation - the result coming much to the disappointment of Sea View faithful who will now have to content themselves with watching their side in the lower league come next season.
