Heap of refuse illegally dumped in Bakau street

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, July 29, 2010
A heap of garbage has been found dumped in the Sulayman Sonko Street in Bakau New Town by unknown individuals. This clandestine act has been emiting very unpleasant odour in the residential area posing health threats to the residents.

The Daily Observer visited this ugly scene and spoke to some of the residents of the area, who were complaining bitterly. They explained that the culprits came to the area seven times with a truck full of rubbish containing broken bottles, tree trunks, papers and many other materials and dumped them in the street.

When the culprits were challenged for explanation, the residents said they did not give them any reason for doing it."We don't need it; those who put it there should remove it. This is garbage," said one of the residents of the area. The residents finally called on the National Environment Agency to intervene.
