Hearts to Africa donates to 56 schools

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, December 08, 2009
Hearts to Africa Foundation, a non-profit making charitable organisation, based in the United Kingdom, last Saturday donated learning materials to 56 schools from nursery to senior school level in the country, at a presentation ceremony held at Atlantic Hotel in Banjul.

Speaking at the ceremony, Musa Mendy, senior education officer in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, said  Hearts to Africa started this noble job in The Gambia ten years ago, commending them for the initiative. He reiterated the Gambia government’s slogan that “for education, the sky is the limit”. Mendy, further urged students to value the donated items and to make best use of them. For his part, Yankuba Bojang, vice president of Hearts to Africa, said this is their third time of coming to The Gambia to help schools in the country with learning materials. According to him, the organisation will do all it could to make education a reality for students in the country. Bojang added that this gesture is good for the future of The Gambia’s education system, pointing out the fact that “no development can take place without making education a reality”.

He urged them to work hard in school and become responsible people in the country. For his part, Samuel Burke, president of Hearts to Africa Foundation, explained that he first visited The Gambia in 1997, describing the country as a beautiful, full of friendly people. He promised to continue helping the people of the country especially students. Lamin Balajo, secretary general of the Hearts to Africa Foundation and Alikali Korita, coordinator of the Early Childhood Programme at The Gambia College, expressed similar sentiments.
