Hippos on the rampage in CRR again

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
At least twenty rice fields have been destroyed by Hippopotami in Kuntaur Fulla Kunda, Niani District, Central River Region North.

Niani District is among the major rice growing areas in the region.  The incident, which has left many farmers in a desperate situation, has in recent days been a centre of discussion among the local authorities in Niani and Nianija. It can be recalled that in the first week of April, a similar incident occurred at the Njabi rice field, where the people of Kass Fulla, Kass Wollof and many other villages cultivate rice.

Speaking to this reporter over the weekend in Kuntaur Fulla Kunda, the Alkalo of the village, Dickory Jawo said the hippo menace in the area is becoming more serious. He appealed to the authorities concerned to help reduce the hippo menace. He pointed out that if the situation continues like this, people in the area will never attain food self-sufficiency.
