Honouring our gallant soldiers

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 13, 2009
Editorial,

Nobility is a hallmark of the army. This dates backs to the days of yore when gallant knights of chivalry dedicated themselves to the defense of the weak and helpless. Like those knights of old, to serve and protect the nation is the lot of the contemporary soldier.

Defenders of the realm, our soldiers help to protect all that we, as a nation and as a people, hold dear. Whilst many slumber, they patrol our streets for security's sake. From us, they deserve respect. No longer do we dwell in those days when our security institutions were seen as dumping grounds for rejects.

Today, ours is a modern and proud army. Professionalism, loyalty, discipline, honor, and respect are inbred in these brave champions of our land. The testaments to their valour abound. In Liberia, Sierra Leone, East Timor, Darfur, and other troubled lands, they have proven and continue to prove themselves as soldiers of peace.

For these brave men and women, there has been one source of inspiration: President Jammeh. His words and works have helped to motivate the members of our armed forces and spur them to heroic actions.

A soldier's life is not an easy one. Sacrifices have to be made frequently for the sake of others. True compensation for this, only the Creator can give, but a pat on the back is never amiss. We send to all the recently promoted and decorated soldiers our hearty extolment. Prayers and blessings are also forwarded to the Gamcoy 9 contingent, as we welcome the Gamcoy 8 contingent back.

To all the soldiers of our armed forces: We are proud of you.
