Housing scheme beginsWednesday, January 25, 2012 Editorial Barely a month after the Canadian housing company made known its intention to invest in a housing scheme in The Gambia, the project has hit the ground. Partnering with the Asset Management Recovery Corporation (AMRC) and the Kanilai Group Investment (KGI), the company is poised to initially invest over 40 million euros in the country, and will engage in the construction of low, middle and high level houses that will be affordable to Gambians. The absence of delay in the laying of the foundation stone for this mega housing scheme, which was spearheaded by the Gambian leader himself in Kanilai shows the preparedness of the leadership to march words with action. We need not reiterate the significance of the project. Every sober-minded person is aware that housing is a basic human right. This is because every man has a right to shelter, a home to lay his or her head. In fact, housing is paramount to human existence as it ranks among the top three needs of man. The provision of adequate and affordable housing in any country is very vital as housing is a stimulant of the national economy. Housing is a set of durable assets, which accounts for a high proportion of a country’s wealth and on which households spend a substantial part of their income. The project therefore has the potential to take this country to another level in terms of poverty alleviation and improvement in the standards of living of the people. It also shows that with President Jammeh, the sky is the limit for our development endeavours. Whilst we eagerly await the full operation of the project, we call on Gambians to embrace the scheme with open arms so that collectively we can provide decent shelter for everyone.
