Humanity First assists URR flood victims

Africa » Gambia
Monday, August 23, 2010
Humanity First The Gambia, a local  charity organisation, has recently donated some 50 bags of rice to flood victims in the Upper River Region (URR).

The donation was made through the Regional Disaster Management Committee at a ceremony held at the governors’ bantaba in Basse. Speaking at the occasion, Alhaji Omar Khan, governor of the region, noted that the move by Humanity First was not a surprise to him and the people of URR because the organisation has been rendering quite a number of assistance to the needy across the country. He said the gesture also demonstrated the organisation's absolute dedication and total commitment to humanitarian issues. He therefore thanked the organisation for their contribution towards national building.

Handing over the items on behalf of Humanity First, Babucarr Sowe, the organisation's disaster coordinator, outlined his organisation's unwavering commitment to assisting people in desperate conditions particularly flood victims. According to him, his organisation has been rendering so many assistance throughout the country, adding that the  organisation was established by the fourth Kalipha of the Ahamadyya Muslim Jaamat with a view to rendering humanitarian assistance to the needy people across the globe. He concluded his remarks by urging the beneficiaries to kindly make the best use of the items.

Mawdo Amadou Jallow, URR’s regional disaster coordinator, who also received the items on behalf of the victims, thanked Humanity First for such a timely gesture, noting that the move symbolises strong partnership between his organisation and Humanity First. He expressed optimism that the gesture will do a lot for 1100 people affected by this year's flood in the region and applauded the organisation for their enormous contributions.

In a related but seperate engagement, the regional disaster management committee in URR gave out  60 bags of rice, eight 20litre gallons of oil and 57 bed nets to flood victims in the region. The regional disaster coordinator, Mawdo Amadou Jallow,  informed this paper that  the distribution was targeted for 45 severely affected families in the region.

He further made it clear that not all the affected families can be assisted at once but gave assurance that his organisation will do all that they can to ensure that disaster victims are assisted.
