"I don't need a lawyer" - Kerewan double murder suspectThursday, May 21, 2009 Amadou Jarra, a Malian currently in detention at the Remand Wing in the Mile II Central Prison, charged for killing two women in Kerewan village, North Bank Region (WR), yesterday told the presiding judge at the special criminal court at the High Court that he (Jarra) did not need the service of any lawyer. "My lord I don't need the services of a lawyer, because I have none of my relatives here in The Gambia," he said. The Malian, accused of deliberately killing two women sharing the same husband in Kerewan, was responding to questions posed to him by the presiding judge, Justice Moses Richard, as to whether any lawyer made a visit to him at Mile II Central Prison and whether he needed the service of a lawyer. However, he changed his statement and said he needed the service of a lawyer, after the issues have been thoroughly explained to him by the court interpreter. He further explained that the reason why he said he did not need a lawyer was because he thought the lawyer would be paid by either him or his relatives. Justice Richard at that juncture made an order for the Master of the High Court to provide lawyer for the accused on or before the 27th of May 2009. Author: by Sanna Jawara | Media Actions See Also |
