'I will surprise the DPP'

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court has  remarked that he will surprise the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Richard Chenge come the 23rd of March 2010.

This statement came when a murder case involving one Jawo Jallow was mentioned and there was no sign of progress on the matter on the side of the prosecution, despite the fact that the matter was adjourned for many times without any proper trial.

The accused is standing trial on criminal offence of manslaughter alleged to have been committed in the neighbouring Casamance region of the Republic of Senegal in 2007. "Today the state must either progress with the case or I will discharge the accused. I have drawn the attention of the DPP to this case with regard to the need to either progress with it or discharge the accused", the High Court judge said.

DDPP Mikailu Abdulahi at that juncture urged the court to give the prosecution office the last chance and promised that the court order will be sent to the office of the Inspector General of Police. He added that the court will be accordingly informed on or before the 22nd of March 2010.
