High Court rejects 'drug peddler's' bail

Africa » Gambia
Friday, July 24, 2009
Justice Moses Richards of the court has rejected the bail application for three accused persons alleged to have been charged with possession and trafficking of prohibited drugs.

The three are Tijan Ndure, Karamo Drammeh, and Ansumana Fatty. The three are alleged to have been found in possession of 18  and 20 grams of Cannabis Stiva commonly known as Jamba, for the purpose of trafficking.

In his submissions, the principal state counsel, SH Barkum, informed the court that the three accused persons are among the seven accused persons recently arraigned before the Brikama Magistrates Court on charges of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining money by false pretence, and assaulting agents of the NIA.

Mr Barkum disclosed that these three accused persons are facing drug related charges and the state was preparing their indictment. In his ruling, justice Richards rejected the accused persons' application for bail and ordered that their application for bail be put on hold in the light of the state counsel's application for an indictment.
