Editorial

Tomorrow is independence day; a day that some 45 years ago went down in the annals of our history marking the end of a struggle to regain our liberty. It was this day, 18th February, 1965 that the Union Jack was lowered in The Gambia.   It is therefore a moment of reflection; a moment when we as  Gambians should take stock and critically assess ourselves with regards the progress we have registered after 45 years of nationhood, the challenges that lie ahead and as well formulate concrete plans for the future.

As we prepare ourselves to commemorate this day, we should always remember that February 18 1965 was an important day in the history of The Gambia, a former British colony now widely referred to as the Smiling Coast of Africa and a haven for investors and visitors. The day is symbolic and historic in the sense that it was the day when the country  broke the chains of imperialism; thereby ushering in self-rule, and setting the pace for human, political and socio-economic development of The Gambia for future generations.

The day created a new nation capable of running and administering its own affairs distinct from both international and external meddling. The significance of February 18 1965 cannot be overemphasised in this page cognisance of the currents affairs in the world and the huddles of belabouring under colonial rule coupled with its accompanied hardship and challenges that needs to be overcome at all cost for the interest of humanity.

Historians and those fortunate enough to have a basic understanding of the past without doubt know the struggles made by some Gambians for total liberation of their country. Such people did a lot for The Gambia and her people; they have sacrificed their time and energy for the cause of the country leading to the historic February 18th 19965 and the subsequent attainment of republican status in April 1970.

As the country braces up to celebrate 45 years  on Thursday, 18th February 2010, we wish all a happy celebration and may we continue to live in peace, progress and prosperity.
