Tuesday, July 07, 2009
Residents of Garawol village in the Kantora district of the Upper River Region (URR) where when the news of a young woman in her late twenties committed infanticide.

According to sources, the  suspect who is identified as Haja Sillah, is said to be married to one Alhage Touray, a native of Gararwol, but currently residing in Spain for four years now. Our sources revealed that the suspect Haja Sillah has an extra marital affair with another man  which led to her pregnancy.  She later went on labour, where she was said to have confined herself in her birth room and  subsequently gave  birth  to a baby whom  she dumped  in a bucket and absconded to nearby settlement called Baragi Kunda.

However, upon growing suspicious, the neighbours got their acts together by breaking the birth room and found the lifeless baby inside a bucket.  The remains of the baby could not be kept at the Garawol Health Centre, as there was no cooling facility available .This prompted the burial to take place to disposed of the remains.

The suspect, Haja Sillah was later arrested by the police and detained at Fatoto police station. The regional police commissioner in the URR, Chief supritendent Ebrima Cham confirmed to the Daily Observer. Meanwhile residents of Garawol who spoke to our reporter at the ground, expressed sadness and shock with the whole scene, describing it as a barbaric and inhuman act. They called on other young women in the area and the surroundings to learn from Haja Sillah's mistake and avoid being unfaithful to their husbands.
