Inter-schools heats held

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
The annual inter-school heats competition that gather secondary schools within the Greater Banjul Areas and organised by the Gambia Secondary School Sports Association was held over the weekend at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The two-day competition, which gathered 15 Upper Basic Schools and 19 Secondary Schools, saw certain schools signalled a comeback in the athletics arena after qualifying for several events ahead of the grand finals scheduled for next weekend at the same venue. Muslim Senior Secondary Schools is one such school who surpassed all expectations after qualifying for 29 events. Gambia Senior Secondary School also made it in 29 events while their rivals Saint Augustine’s Secondary School qualified in 41 events.

In the Upper Basic School category, the likes of Latrikunda Upper Basic School, Abuko Upper, Charles Jaw and Banjulinding also delight hearts after qualifying in most events. Alhagie Darboe, the secretary general of the Gambia Secondary School Sports Association said, there were 43 events for senior schools and 37 events for the Upper Basic Schools.

He added that three senior schools in each category were to qualify in each event for the finals. Darboe said the qualified schools within the Greater Banjul Areas would be joined by five Upper Basic and senior secondary schools that have already qualified from the provinces for the grand finals.
