Wednesday, March 10, 2010
International Artist Association, a non profit making association with members drawn different countries across the globe, are currently exhibiting their products in the hall of Women's Museum and Arts Centre hosted in Mama Africa Art Gallery in Batokunku, Kombo South.

A total of  four top women artists - Margareta Schuls, president of the International Women Artists; Maria Dierkercame; Lilo Werner and Stefanie Lange came  from the Federal Republic of Germany and twenty-two artists across the globe sent in their products for exhibition. The artistic products are displayed all over within and outside of the first-ever women's museum established in The Gambia.

Some of the products on display included sculptors, contemporary paintings of different size and styles, graphics made out of clay from Germany, Sudan, Kenya, The Gambia, Bolivia among other countries known for their spirited creativity and innovations in the world of arts and culture.

The Women' Museum is operated and run by Isha Fofana, a renowned female Gambian artist based in Germany for some years and now back home to contribute her quota to national development. The exhibition according to the German female artists, is part of series of activities making the Women's Day celebration observed through the world. They revealed that the exhibition will last for the duration of the Gambian women's week celebration, which started yesterday, the 8th of March 2010.

Margareta Schuls, accompanied by her team of female artists, in a chat with the Arts and Culture desk at the site of the exhibition, spoke extensively about the objectives of the association, their purpose of coming to The Gambia as the first country to host such an arts exhibition, their desire to be organising such exhibitions throughout the globe, the areas of their specialisation in the world of arts, the need for empowerment of women among other topical issues.

Margareta explained among other things that the association was established as part of the need to promote cultural network among different countries of the world. Membership is not limited to only the women. "We have male members in the association and we work collectively towards the promotion of arts and culture in the world. We do organise series of activities such as reading, lectures, performances among others geared towards promoting the spirit of arts and culture in the world", she hinted the Arts and Culture desk.

Isha Fofana, coordinator of the Women's Museum and her husband, Bern Axe, jointly expressed profound appreciation for hosting the exhibition in The Gambia. "We are extremely delighted to host the exhibition in The Gambia widely referred to as the Smiling Coast of Africa. The exhibition is a big plus for the Women's Museum, which was opened few weeks ago", the couple remarked with delight and urged the visiting artists to relax and feel at home as The Gambia and the Federal Republic of Germany share a lot in common.

Isha went further to highlight the objectives of the Women's Museum and the rational behind establishing Mama Africa in both Germany and The Gambia. She assured of her strong resolve towards promoting the spirit of arts and culture in the country.
