International Families Day observed

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, May 17, 2012

Ndow’s Comprehensive Lower Basic School in collaboration with the Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet), a school-based club under the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Tuesday jointly commemorated the International Families Day on the theme, ‘Ensuring work family balance’.The occasion held at the library hall of Ndow’s Comprehensive Lower Basic School along MDI Road in Kanifing attracted scores of students and local dignitaries.

The International Families Day was set aside by the United Nations General Assembly in its Resolution 47/237 of September 1993 to be observed on the 15th May each year. In the following year 1994, the UN pronounced it as the International Year of Families in response to changing social and economic structures of societies.

Speaking at the occasion, the director of Social Welfare, Fanta Bai Secka seized the opportunity to enjoin men to also take family care responsibilities and duties, arguing that they should not leave everything in the hands of women. She advised that parents should give their young boys the proper training so as to become responsible persons in the society.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the proprietress of Ndow’s Comprehensive Lower Basic School, Harriett Ndow, described the day as very significant in the lives of children and their parents. Ndow noted that in all her schools, she always urge the pupils to be peaceful at all times and unite as one family.

The principal of the school, Francis Gomez, for his part harped on the continued excellent academic performance of Ndow’s since its inception many years ago and then thanked the proprietress of the school for her continuous support to them.
