Jaliba Kuyateh helps raise funds for Deaf education

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, July 30, 2009
What is good for the gander is also good for the goose.

This is the spirit that was displayed recently at the Buffer Zone Garden in Tallinding where the KorakKing, Jaliba Kuyateh, performed for the Gambia Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (GADHOH) Female Wing, who were conducting fundraising programme. The well attended program was able to raise D15,000 for the Deaf Nursery School in Kanifing and the Skills Training Centre for deaf women and girls.

The gathering were treated to over two hours of Jaliba's kora playing in aid of this worthy cause and a great display of dancing from the young women who attend the skills centre.

Isatou Sanyang, director of the GADHOH's Female Wing, expressed her delight, saying "we are very lucky to have the support of so many friends in making the programme successful and raising money for the education of deaf children and young women." She thanked all those who helped them in one way or the other. "I also want to thank those committed people who volunteered their time over the weekend to the success of the event. God bless you all," Isatou said.

The female wing was set up in the late 1990's and now runs a nursery school which teaches sign language to deaf children aged 4-7 as well as a skills training centre for young deaf women over the age of 15. They work in partnership with VSO.
