Janjangbureh community embarks on cleaning exercise

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, February 02, 2010
Over three hundred people in Janjangbureh, Central River Region, on Saturday embarked on a massive cleaning exercise in the streets of Janjangbureh.

During the clean-up exercise, Mark Thompson, a British national and manager of Bird Safari Lodge, donated 10 dustbins. Speaking to our reporter shortly after the exercise, the National Assembly member of the area, Foday Jibani Manka, highlighted the significance of the exercise. He commended the donor for his humanitarian gesture, noting that it will go a long way in improving the environmental sanitation of the town. He then urged the people to take ‘Operation clean the nation’ seriously.

For his part, Fafanding Kinteh, the Regional Programme officer at the National Environmental Agency, called on the community of  Janjangbureh to change their attitude towards waste management and keep their environment clean. He reminded the people about the anti-littering law and assured of launching more sensitisation campaign for the community.

The District’s chief, Bakary Jam Jawo, applauded the people for their active participation in the exercise and thanked the donor for the gesture. Mark Thompson, the donor, said this is to show their appreciation to the community in keeping the environment clean. Other speakers included Ebrima Janko Foon,  Hamadi Jawneh, Alhaji Kama Sambou and Aja Sire Mballow, who all shared similar sentiments.
