Jays slams GAA

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, July 30, 2009
Gambian born, Norwegian runner Jaysuma Saidy Ndure has made a scathing attack on his native country's athletics body, the Gambia Athletics Association, for not been helpful to him and other young athletes with great potentials.

Jay who turned his nationality to run for Norway three years ago, lamented the lack of basic facilities for Gambian athletes and described the GAA as being there for only themselves. He made this criticisms on a BBC Fast Track interview on Monday. Jays who won bronze for The Gambia in the  100metrets in the 2004 African athletics championships, said he has been held back by the GAA and as it was like all the time stress and he could not concentrate.

'I spent six weeks there this year but am not talking to the federation at all because they are not there for the athletes but themselves. I feel sorry for those talented ones someone of them might even be better than me. But they have no support. You do not even get spikes. My plans are to go there when am done and getting them some spikes", he said. Jays's recent outing ended in fourth place in the 200 meters during the London grand prix.

However, Arthur Jackson athletics coach and a member  of the GAA while admitting that Jays may not be having the kind of support as other international athletes, said the GAA has done all it could to support the athletes under its jurisdiction up to the extent of providing them scholarships including himself, with the help of the National Olympic Committee. "We may not have these facilities on daily bases but whenever we have them, we extend them to our athletes.

In fact these are the items with which we motivate the talented ones. There has never been a time when a Gambian athlete has been sent to an event bare footed. Even the local athletes here all have spikes to run with,' Jackson said.
