Jiffarong youth poised to revitalise women’s garden

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 18, 2012

The youth of Jiffarong village in Kiang West District, last weekend embarked on a self-help community project that seeks to revitalise a garden for women of the village that has not been functional for nearly two decades.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, Yaya Njie, one of the founding members of the Jiffarong Youth Association (JYA) who is also one of the youths who initiated this move, said that revitalising the garden for the women of the village would be very vital in terms of income generation. He spoke about the importance of horticulture and made reference to other communities that embarked on such project.

Lamin Njie, also a member of JYA, who spearheaded the initiative, dilated on the importance of horticulture, saying it is one of the ways through which women can earn a good income. He also appealed for assistance from the government, NGOs and philanthropists in the area of provision of water in the garden.
