Journalists win Fatou - Mbye memorial tourney

Monday, March 01, 2010
A goal in either side of halftime saw the sport journalists ease to a 2-1 win over Youth Ambassadors for Peace in the final of the Fatou Mbye Memorial Football Tournament on Friday.

The Gambian journalists took the lead midway through the first half through Unique FM"s Amadou Manga before Lamin Drammeh of the Point Newspaper sealed the day and even though the Youth Ambassadors pulled a goal back, it proved to be a mere consolation. But all credit for the victory will go to Paradise FM's Alasan Mballow who made a string of world class saves at the journalists goal mouth to deny a rampant Youth Ambassadors in the second period.

The tournament was organised by the Gambia Sports Journalists Association in memory of their late colleague Fatou BK Mbye a renowned sports commentator who passed away in October of last year due to a kidney failure. Eight teams [four male and four female teams] participated in the tournament, the proceeds from which will go to the family of the deceased.

The journalists dominated the early proceedings and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half with a wonderful free-kick by Amadou Wuyeh Manga as they went into halftime with the 1-0 lead. But the second half turned into almost a one man show as Mballow at goal for the journalists pulled off several stunning saves thrown at him by the Youth Ambassadors to deny them a breakthrough.

Twice he cleared off the line that sent hundreds of fans at the Serekunda East mini-stadium into raptures and disbelief as he showed that not only can he talk, but he can also play in the field of football. The journalists caught their opponents on the break as a Besenty Gomez cross found Lamin Drammeh unmarked in the area who tapped in from close range to seal the game. But the opponents refused to be down as they hit back almost immediately to finally get a way past the impressive Alasan Mballow but it proved too little too late as the journalists carried the day.
