Judge orders prison official to report to chief justiceThursday, June 11, 2009 Justice Sallah Wadda of the High Court in Banjul, has ordered one Sgt. Kalipha Bojang of The Gambia Prison Service to report to the chief justice's office on Monday June 15, 2009, with all prison documents relating to one Sulayman Jammeh, a convict serving a sentence at the Mile II State Central Prison. Justice Wadda made this declaration following the convict's notice of appeal urging the court to reduce the sentence imposed on him by the Brikama Magistrates Court in July 2004. The convict indicated that he was arraigned before the then Magistrate Mboto of the Brikama Magistrates Court for allegedly trafficking prohibited drugs. The convict further indicated that he pleaded guilty to the charge and the magistrate ordered that he should be remanded. Sulayman Jammeh said he was then remanded for two months at Mile II but added that whilst he was at the Remand Wing, a sentence warrant was brought and he was sentenced in absentia by the then Magistrate Mboto in July 2004. The appellant further said he was then taken from the Remand Wing to the Security Detention Wing where he spent 7 days before he was taken to the Prison Wing, where he has been serving his sentence. Justice Sallah Wadda then asked the senior prison officer, Sgt. Kalipha Bojang, to present all documents relating to the convict, including the records of proceedings from the lower court and documents since the appellant's first day of incarceration at the Mile II State Central Prison to the chief justice for a proper examination of the appellant's case.
