Friday, June 19, 2009
Justice Moses Richards of the Special Crime Division of the High Cout has urged the defence counsel, Lawyer Jaharteh to be more committed in defending her client, Amadou Jarra a Malian, who is charged with killing two women in Kerewan.

Justice Richards made this remarks when the matter was called and Lawyer Jaharteh informed the court that she needed time to see the accused and have a chat with him. Lawyer Jaharteh said since the accused briefs was given to her, she has never seen the accused and she could not proceed.

Lawyer Jaharteh informed the court hat she has two other state briefs. In addition she was travelling out of the jurisdiction. Justice Richards disclosed that Justice delayed is Justice denied. He said, it is not only applicable in the instance of the accused but the court is also aware that there are witnesses who travels far from the North Bank Region to give evidence.

He said, these witnesses are not paid by the state, but they are only present to make sure that justice is done.  Justice Richards said the family of the victims are also waiting anxiously for the conclusion of this matter and  added that  it would be unfair if the accused counsel is not committed to ensuring that the matter comes to a conclusion and within the shortest possible time.  Hearing continues.
