July 22nd celebrations

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, July 16, 2009
Editor,

Please, allow me space in your newspaper to share with Gambians my thoughts on the July 22nd revolution. The 15th anniversary of the July 22nd revolution cannot be mentioned without firstly congratulating the founding father of the revolution, Skeikh Professor Dr. Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh, on this auspicious occasion.  It is time for the people to reflect on the changes the July 22nd revolution has brought about in The Gambia.

Since July 22nd 1994, Gambians witnessed immense infrastructural social and economic development in the country.  For me to outline all the development programmes July 22nd revolution has created would be difficult.

However, I would just outline the major aspects of socio-economic developments that the revolution has brought into the country. The most remarkable development brought by the July 22nd revolution include  the modern and standard airport. Before, one usually feels ashamed of the airport when one was to arrive or take-off at the airport. Secondly, a television station, which enlightens and entertains people so that there can be a culture of awareness.

After the July 22nd revolution, The Gambia can boast of several senior secondary schools, both in the Kombo's and the villages at large. It has made education accessible to the rich and poor. Prior to July 22nd 1994, high schools could be counted and they were existing only within the greater Banjul areas, apart from Amitage high school.

The rural electrification project is another achievement the July 22nd revolution has brought throughout the country.  This year 2009, Gambians can boast of streetlights throughout the greater Banjul area and other parts of the semi-urban districts.  Just as streetlights shine so bright, so shall the standard of living of Gambians improved. Another relevant development area the July 22nd has brought to the doorstep of Gambians is the back to the land initiative which involves agricultural ventures towards food self-sufficiency and fight against hunger and high cost of basic commodities.  Basic commodities like rice and vegetables could have been even more expensive if people had not been encouraged into farming.

On health, the president's herbal treatment against even the fatal Hiv/Aids and other diseases is an outstanding achievement for Gambians. The road construction projects throughout the country. These road constructions have improved the road network system.  To now travel from Koina to Kartong is much easier, compared to before when, the roads, especially in the rural areas, were in a miserable condition.

In a nutshell, one can say that the July 22nd takeover has brought about development in all sectors of national development thanks to president Jammeh. Gambians let us all rally behind and give all support to our young, dynamic and pan-African leader.

May we all live to witness many more July 22nd revolution celebrations in the future, may the ongoing peace and socio-economic development continue so that our leader's aspiration for the Gambia to become a Silicon Valley by the year 2020 can succeed.
