Justice Richards assures suspects of legal aid

Justice Moses Richards of the special cirminal court in Banjul, on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 intimated the court that the judiciary has put in a place   fresh and better arrangements to ensuring that accused persons charged with capital offences secure the services of a legal counsel.

Justice Richards made this remarks when the criminal case involving the state against two alleged robbery suspects came up before the said special criminal court. The two, Modou Sanneh and Ebou Cham are charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit felony and robbery with violence.  

The suspects are alleged to have conspired and threatrended one Fatou Camara with a knife and violently robbed her of a Nokia mobile phone on October 18, 2 2008 at Dippakunda, in the Kanifing muncipality. Justice Richards then urged the court clerk to furnish the court with the list of cases in which the accused persons have not been provided with lawyers. He noted that mechanism was in place to ensure that accused persons are provided legal counsel.
The matter was adjourned for mention on September 15, 2009.
