Kebba Kinteh: APRC militant (1952-2010)

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Kebba Kinteh, ex-administrative secretary of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC)  and one of the foremost promoters and first regional coordinator of the July 22nd Movement in the Lower Baddibu District, Norht Bank Region, departed this life suddenly about forty days ago while travelling on board a public transport en-route to Banjul for the purpose of "seeing off" the President of the Republic and delegation to Barra on the start of the first leg of the President's ' Dialogue With The People Tour'. He was 58 years old and lived in Bundung Bantaba in the Kanifing Municipality.

He was found by fellow passengers after he tilted his head and stretched his legs and hands. On that faithful Monday, July 12, 2010, Mr. Kinteh had spent a normal morning at his home with his wives Lisa Fatty and Aja Saine and children, apparently in excellent health. He had had no previous heart attacks, nor any other recent illness. Mr. Kinteh was declared clinically dead upon arrival at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital.

A compassionate crowd of about 2,000 persons gathered in the Bundung Bantaba Mosque to pay homage to the late Kebba Kinteh. At the conclusion of the funeral rites in which old friend Minister Lamin Kabba Bajo testified to Kebba Kinteh's "loyalty to the APRC government" and in which Nfamara Jobe broke down, many of the mourners pressed forward to lift up the coffin, extolling The Almighty Allah as they carry Kebba on his final journey to meet his maker.

Nfamara Jobe, bosom friend of the deceased whispered to me saying, "I don't know whether I'll be able to do this." Then he murmured some words which were inaudible. He lapsed into sobs and silence as I helped him away from the crowd. Among those at hand at the mosque and who had followed the walking crowd to the Budung Bantaba cemetery were, a handful of National Assembly members, politicians and long time associates like NAWEC's Lang Sabally, GPA's Fafanding  Darboe, the senior Kebba Kinteh, the head of Police Prosecution Commission Kinteh. His former comrades were there, Buba Senghore, Amedou Baldeh  Sanna Bojang  Pateh Ceesay, Kebba Dibba and Lang Kinteh, eldest son of the faithful departed.

A transplanted Baddibunka boy, Kebba Kinteh was an active politician and member of the Baddibu elite living in the Greater Banjul Area. He was a member of the APRC which he was connected with from its inception in 1995. Prior to this period, Mr. Kinteh was Regional Coordinator of the July 22 Movement in Lower  Baddibu following the historic events of 1994. He was born in October 15, 1952 at Kinteh Kunda, North Bank Region and was educated from Kinteh Kunda Primary School, Crab Island Junior Secondary School, and the Armitage Boarding High School in Jangjangburay, Central River Region in 1973 and the Yundum College where he obtained a Higher Teachers' Certificate in 1978.

He taught briefly at Niamina Dankunku in the Central River Region and Sukuta Primary School in the Kombo North District of the Western Region.. He was a trouble-free child and grew into a short, handsome youth. With his college education and ambition to live a more bustling world, he left the teaching field and joined the hotel industry, having worked at Front Offices of the Atlantic Hotel and Novotel Kombo Beach Hotel. Kebba also secured employment with Banjul Brewery and later with the World Food Program. In July 1994, Kebba became a pioneer member of the July 22 revolutionary movement alongside Tamsir Jallow, Baba Jobe, Faballa Kinteh and Adama Cham. He was the first Regional Coordinator of the movement in NBR and had worked in every region of the country before taking up appointment at the APRC secretariat as deputy Administrative Secretary in 2000. He later became Administrative Secretary up to 2005.

Dr. Kebbeh, director general of The  Gambia Public  Procurement Authority(GPPA) and friend of over 40 years to the brilliant and kindhearted Kebba, tried to offer tribute, saying, he has lost a true friend who was very productive and understanding. "He had a passion for politics and was accommodative to divergent political ideologies." Politician Fabakary Tombong Jatta, majority leader and  National Assembly Member for Serrekunda East Constituency recalled Kebba as an executive member of the July 22 Movement who had diligently served as an administrative secretary at the APRC bureau. He said of Kebba. "It was at the bureau and after that I came to appreciate his immense untapped potential. He was a prolific writer and highly intelligent with a delightful character. He appreciated the APRC and its leader for his lofty ideals and unsurpassable love for the country and people. Before his untimely death, Kebba was willing and enthusiastic to revive the APRC's Patriot newspaper following our discussion on the issue." Fabakary said that Kebba was content and very consistent in his social relationships. He was a loving family head who recently struggled daily to make his family happy. "I have indeed lost a brother and friend whose relationship I have immensely benefitted from as he was very instrumental in my political success".

Former minister and APRC National Mobilizer Yankuba Touray stated that "Kebba had dedicated his life to the service of the country and had cared and shared with his family and friends. May his soul rest in perfect peace?" In addition to his two wives Lisa Fatty and Aja Saine, Kebba Kinteh is survived by eight children, five boys and three girls and his brothers and sisters.
