Kerewan crowned Kombo North champions

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Kombo Kerewan United were over the weekend crowned champions of this year’s Kombo North District football championship following a 2-0 defeat of Sukuta in a final played at the Kerewan football field.

Musa Sanyang opened the scorings for Kerewan United in the first half following a swift break from a counter attack after only four minutes into the game. Goalkeeper Ensa Jarju started the move by sending a long ball to the far right which was met by captain Samba Gibba whose one time cross was slotted in by Sanyang.

Sukuta dominated proceedings from that point but missed several opportunities to equalise and were severely punished once again on the break. Musa Sanyang agin turned out to be the hero scoring his second goal and winner on the half hour mark after Sukuta failed to clear their area when the ball hit a cross bar.

During the second half Sukuta tried all they could but the closest they came to grabbing a goal was in the 78th minute when substitute Abdoulie Cham was thwarted by the Kerewan defence as they tried to pull the trigger. As winners, Kerewan went home with a giant trophy and a cash prize of D6000 while Sukuta pocketed D4000. Sulayman Bojang was awarded best player of the tournament while certificates were also awarded to the referees.
