KEYCDA, district authorities vow to eliminate youth unemployment

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, August 31, 2010
The members of Kombo East Youth and Children Development Alliance (KEYCDA) and their district authorities have pledged to fight against the scourge of youth unemployment in their district.

They also promised to empower the young people to effectively take charge of their own development. The youth and district authorities made this promise last Sunday, during a day’s meeting held at the home of the Kombo East District chief in Sohm Village, to discuss the various roles, responsibilities and strategies for the sustainable development of the district. Speaking at the meeting, Alhaji Basiru Jarju, chief of Kombo East District, urged the village Alkalolu and VDC members to empower and encourage the young people in the attainment of their goals.

Chief Jarju said that they need to capitalise on resources that are available in the district, to fight against youth unemployment. He however urged the young people to always distance themselves from the traffic and use of illicit drugs, as they can be dangerous to their health. Nuha Nyassi, the chairman of KEYCDA management board, disclosed to the district authorities that it is their intention to venture into meat selling and other activities that could be beneficial to young people and redirect their focus from things and matters that are not important. Currently, he said, their targets are on course at the Kuloro Skills Center, where they are running a bakery. Nyassi called on the chief and the Alkalolu to give them their support to effectively carry out their activities.

Lamin Darboe, youth and child officer of Kaira Nyining Federation, hailed the efforts of the young people, noting that since the inception of the alliance in 2005, many young people have acquired jobs through it.
