Kidnapping trial continues

Friday, July 17, 2009
The criminal trial involving three accused persons has resumed before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Division of the High Court in Banjul.

The accused persons, Sheriff Jallow, Gibril Jallow and Banna Joiner were alleged to have stolen the sum of D75,000, and to assaulted and abducted one Ismaila Demba in November 6, 2008 in the Kanifing Municipality.

The 2nd prosecution witness, Modou Musa Cham narrated how the said Ismaila Demba took him with his car and intercepted a tenant (of Cham's), a German lady named Sara, around the Brusubi roundabout. Cham further explained that after they intercepted the lady, they went to the police station where he left Ismaila Demba.

The witness said he later received a telephone call from one Ismaila Demba, informing him that he was around Luigi's restaurant and that he saw a car that looked like the car that was carrying the German lady. The witness said he then advised him to go to the nearest police station if he felt threatened but the telephone conversation came to an abrupt end.

The witness said when he went to Luigi's Restaurant, he met his brother, Ebou Cham, who told him that he saw Ismaila Demba being picked up by some people. Modou Cham disclosed that at about 4:00am on November 7, 2008, Ismaila telephoned him, crying and saying: "If you see what these boys have done to me".

The witness said during the conversation, Ismaila Demba mentioned the accused persons. The witness further said  that around 11:00am that same day, Islaima Demba called him, and asked him to accompany him to see his father in Bakau. The witness said when he saw him (Demba), his face was swollen and had marks. Modou Cham also revealed that on that same day, the 3rd accused, Banna Joiner, telephoned him and stated that Ismaila Demba car's was around the place where they had dropped him the night before.

The witness explained that when Joiner called him, he had no chance to enquire as to why they had beaten him, but he further explained that Demba's involvement was because he drove him to the airport. During cross examination by Lawyer Jobarteh the witness confirmed that he had lived in the UK, but was never deported from the UK.

Hearing continues.
