The Kanifing Municipal Youth Parliament (KMYP) under the purview of the National Youth Parliament (NYP) recently held its third congress and election of new executive, who will serve the parliament at both the municipal and national levels at the KMC Chambers in Kanifing.

Speaking at the congress, Demba Njie, the outgoing speaker of the KMYP, said their term in office was challenging but with determination, they were able to achieve their aspirations. He described the Youth Parliament as a platform were young people come together and share experiences and ideas together. According to him, they are not law markers but agents of change.

Njie reiterated the numerous challenges they faced, ranging from members' commitment, problems of financial support to implement their projects and programmes among others, and implored on the new executive to execute their duties as expected. For his part, Bakary Badjie of KMYP, described the congress as crucial, noting that it is a platform to reflect on the achievement in the past and to look  ahead to the future.

In his solidarity speech, Yusupha Sanyang, the deputy mayor of KMC, who deputised the mayor, urged the parliamentarians to ensure justice and fair play in electing their representatives, rather than favoritism. He advised the incoming executive to be ready to face the challenges that lie ahead of them.

Deputy mayor Sanyang then implored on the youth of KMC to work hard so as to sustain themselves and urged them to make best use of the support accorded them by the council. Babucarr Mbye Saidy, the clerk of the National Youth Parliament, thanked the outgoing executive for their relentless services in representing the voice of the young people of KMYP. He described the National Youth Parliament as an association that advocates a lot of good things for the young and urged them to keep up the good work. He also thanked UNFPA and KMC for their assistance.
