Leeds Trinity College students on training in The Gambia

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 08, 2009
Students from Leeds Trinity College in England are currently on a one-week skills training programme in The Gambia.

Taking place at the Bijilo Lower Basic School, the training programme is based on early education and charity. It is part of their academic programmes at Leeds Trinity College in England. Sarah Tiussler, head of Education Department, Leeds Trinity College, gave a brief background of the link. According to her, she contacted FROGS in UK about Gambian schools prior to their arrival. "Sally Reader, founder of FROGS, brought us to Bijilo Lower Basic School to conduct the programme," she explained.

Tiussler said she chose eight girls from the college to be part of the team adding that this is part of their degree program. She noted that when they returned to England, they will make presentations on what they have done and learned in The Gambia which will also help them raise funds to sponsor many students in The Gambia.

For her part, Sally Reader, founder of FROGS, described the initiative as an important move. According to her, they aim to help sponsor students and build schools in The Gambia.  She said this group of students is the first team to come to The Gambia for the programme and expressed hope that more will follow suit.
