Legislation or shariah

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 04, 2012

Faith and legislation in Islam are inseparable. Legislation is a component of faith and an extension to it. It is the practical side of the faith in the unity of God, in his angels, his prophets, in his faith and the day of judgement.

Legislation in Islam is a detailed code of life organizing man’s relation with his creator and with the members of his society, beginning from the family to humanity in general. All these relations that the Islamic legislation deals with interlock and cooperate to provide guidance for the regulation of life in the best interest of man. Its objective is to create the right man, the happy family, the strong society and the perfect human life.

Legislation begins with the individual, showing him the straight way of living through worship, commands and inhibitions. Worship in all forms is the means of your relation to God, associating your feelings towards him, and transforming your faith into practical results. Moreover, worship controls your relations with the members of your society, as it makes you aware that God is ever watchful over you and aware of things open or hidden. With this conviction you will tend to act in the right way. Indeed, all forms of worship lead to this end solidifying man’s relations with his creator and society.

The forms of worship, or the pillars of Islam, as they are called, are five:

1.Al-Shahadah, or the declaration that(there is no other God but Allah).

2.Prayer r assalah.

3. The poor due or Azzakah.

4. Fasting or assian.

5.Pilgrimage or Al- hadjj.

Al Shahadah

This is the most fundamental principle of Islam on which all other principles are based. It means you bear witness at heart and with word of mouth that there is no God but Allah, who is without partner, and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Al- shahadah comprises and sums up all the elements of the Islamic faith. You cannot be a Muslim unless you pronounce this phase completely (Ashhadu An La Ilaha Illa Allah, Wa Anna Muhammadan Rasulu Allah.) if you declare that there is no deity but Allah, and did not say that Muhammad is his messenger you are not a muslim.

Prayer

This is the most important form of worship as it brings a muslim closer to God. five times a day you disassociate yourself from from your worldly affairs and problems to seek audience before God. Thus the five daily prayers remind you of your submission to your creator and awaken your conscience, and act as a spiritual and physical purgative. Ablution is not only a mean of cleaning the limbs and the face, but also a symbol of internal purification, and a preparation for presenting yourself before your God with a clean heart, free from malice or envy, and a humble soul that submits to none but God. You kneel and prostrate t nobody but the creator of the universe.

Prayer has also many social advantages prayer in congregation is twenty-seven degrees above your solidity prayer. Your meeting with your brother muslims in lines like a solid structure strengthens the unity and the solidarity among muslims and produces feelings of love and fraternity in their hearts. It gives a practical example of equality in islam, as the rich stand in prayer with the poor the rulers beside the ruled, all in equal in the sight of God, all in one line, with one heart and facing one direction. Besides congregation prayer in mosques, there are other occations for muslims to meet in prayer in the audience ofGod, like the Friday noon prayer and the eid (bairam) prayers.

The poor due

This is a small percentage (2.5%) taken from your income when it reaches a certain amount called (Annisab) a minimum. Azzakah is a worship that leads to close communion with God owing to its importance, it has been associated in the Quran with prayer to make us feel hat our obligation to wards the society is also an obligation towards God.

Besides being a worship, Azzakah purifies and sanctifies our wealth, cultivate in us the virtue of charity and cures the disease of amassing money and miserliness. The Quran says (of their goods take alms so that thou mightiest purifies and sanctify them). Azzakah is an ideal social insurance legislation. Itstrengthens the social ties among the members of the society of their most fundamental elements.

These regulations are for human guidance and cover energy phase of human life. They can be summed up as follows.

1.Abstaining from what God forbids : You cannot be a true muslim unless you avoid all God has forbidden and abandon what he has prohibited such as drinking intoxicants, adultery, eating dead and pig flesh, devouring the money of others unlawfully or through usury and deception such as lying, theft, oppression, aggression etc……

2.Obeying God’s commands : A good muslim carries out all God’s commands for he knows that they provide guidance for the regulation of life in the best interest of his society or of humanity in general. Man’s greatest benefit in abiding by God’s law is gaining his pleasure.

3. Morality:all divine inhibitions and commands all forms of worship are closely connected with morality. They are fitted into the frame work of the true religion –islam- which possess a perfect moral system of its own.

The poor due purifies and expands the soul. (of their goods take alms so that thous mightiest purify and sanctify them). The prophet (peace be upon him) has enlarged the moral field of azzakat by saying: your smile to your brother is charity; your enjoining right and forbidding wrong is charity, your pouring water from your pail into your brothers is charity.

Fasting, too if void of moral principles will be only a ritul of starving oneself for no avail. The prophet (peace be upon him) said, ( he who does not give up uttering falsehood and acting according to it, God hath, no need for his abstaining from food and drink>>.

Pilgrimage requires that Muslims should suppress their passions refrain from bloodshed and he pure in word and deed. <>.

The prophet (peace be upon him) was asked << which is the best believer?>> the answer was <>. A man once said to the prophet <>. The prophet replied, <.

The man then said <>. The prophet said <>.

If you observe the moral law in all your actions, you are a good Muslim. Nay, you are an inspiring example ofa perfect Muslim. May God guide you and us to the right path and inspire us with wisdom and truth…I end my treastise with the praise of God, the creator of the universe.
