Let us protect the forest Governor Juwara![]() Thursday, March 04, 2010 Lamin Waa Juwara, the governor of Lower River Region (LRR) has called on the people of his region to protect the forest while expressing dismay over the recent outbreak of bushfire that engulfed a large area in Jarra West District, especially in Mansakonko and satellite villages. He attributed the fire incident to unscrupulous individuals within the society describing the act as unacceptable as it is a sabotage to progress. Governor Juwara made these remarks recently during an interview with Daily Observer's LRR correspondent. According to him, the protection of the flora and fauna would be in the interest of mankind adding that here in The Gambia the role of animals in society especially in our feasts and ceremonies cannot be over-emphasised. He stressed that people should avoid causing bushfires as these would only lead to the massive deaths of animals. He added: "We cannot do without these animals and therefore, we should all make sure that they are given the breeding space to survive." He said bushfires would also add up to the high cost of prices of animals in the various markets across the country. He stated that the situation could be reversed if people engage in rearing animals and stop causing bushfire to the environment. Governor Juwara then used the opportunity to thank the community of Kiang for their endeavour in safeguarding the environment and urged them to keep the momentum for the betterment of all.
