Lightning kills 2 in CRR

Africa » Gambia
Saturday, July 09, 2011
Lightning killed two people in the Central River Region South last Saturday during  downpour.

The downpour also resulted in serious flooding that left 110 people displaced in that part of the région. The two victims were Alhagie Beyai of Tabanani in the Lower Fulladu West who was in his early forties; and Jabou Sabally, a 25-year-old mother of two and native of Sare Kanimang in Upper Fulladu West District.

Narrating the incident, Lamin Beyai, elder brother to one of the deceased said the incident happened while his brother [Alhagie Beyai] was coming from a rice field. He said Alhagie was unfortunate to be near a tree when it was struck by lightning, which affected him, resulting to his death.  According to family sources, Jabou Sabally, the second victim was also travelling during the rain when she was struck by lightning, resulting in her death.

Meanwhile, the regional disaster management committee has visited some areas seriously affected by the rains in Dankunku, Wellingara Ello, Brikamanding and Tabanani. The regional disaster management coordinator, Bubacarr Fofana, commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for their departed souls to rest in perfect peace. He advised people to stay in one place when there is a storm and to plant more trees in their environments to avoid windstorms.
