Linguere clinch Bakau Super CupMonday, August 24, 2009 League champions Linguere have won Bakau Super Cup - the traditional curtain-raiser to the start of the town's nawettan season - beating arch rivals Ron Mango 5-3 on penalties on Saturday after the two sides drew 1-1 in the regulation. Linguere goalkeeper Pa Alieu Njie was the hero of the day having saved three penalties in the dramatic shoot-out. Earlier, the trophy, played for between the league champions and knock-out winners of the previous season, looked to be heading Ron Mango way in regulation time until substitute Muhammed Bah bagged a last-gasp equalizer for Linguere. Lamin Jallow fired the knock-out champions ahead after only 12 minutes when he beat goalkeeper Pa Alieu Njie in a one-on-one situation. That looked to be enough to give Ron Mango victory, although substitute Bah's last-gasp intervention meant the game had to be decided by penalties. An Linguere eventually prevailed. As champions, the Bakau New Town giants walked away with a trophy and cash prize of D5,000 (five thousand dalasis), while Ron Mango received a consolation prize of D3,000 (three thousand dalasis). The weekend's final paved the way for the start of the nawettan proper, which kicks-off on Tuesday, August 25, with Smiling Coast taking on Unique FM, formerly Julangel, in Group A opener. Linguere will return to action on the back of their Super Cup success when they take on Vidar FC on Wednesday, August 26, in another Group A fixture. On Thursday, August 27, Saul Samba will square off against newcomers FC Milan, while Ron Mango will hope to bounce back from their weekend setback when they lock horns with Katchically giants, Bremen Border, on Friday, August 28.
