Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, September 01, 2010
About 300 hundred people from 9 villages in the Lower Saloum District of the Central River Region (CRR) north last Sunday August 29th embarked on a road rehabilitation work. The volunteers worked on the main road linking the 9 villages together in the district.

Speaking to to the Daily Observer shortly after the exercise, the Alkalo of Jimbala Felgo, Omar Jobe, said the road was badly damaged by the  down pour of rain and rehabilitating it will go a long way in easing accessibility for the people of the area. He pointed out that good road contributes to the socio-economic development of the area. The Alkalo of Jimbala Kerr Chendu, Batch Ceesay, said there are 9 Jimbalas in Lower Saloum and this is their main road. He pointed out that rehabilitation of the two-kilometer road can benefit them in many ways, saying that it will help businessmen to have easy access to the 9 villages.

Ndogal Ceesay, a volunteer and youth leader, thanked the communities and the youths for their commitment and patriotism. He said government cannot do all and called for concerted efforts in contributing to nation building. He spoke at length on the various development projects undertaken by the APRC government since 1994. He challenged the youths to respond positively to the clarion call made by President Jammeh. Ceesay finally pointed out that during the rainy season most of the feeder roads are being damaged by heavy rains and it makes it difficult for the people to use the road.
