LRR responds positively to "Operation Clean the Nation"Tuesday, December 22, 2009 The people of Jarra West in the Lower River Region last Saturday responded positively to the monthly "Operation clean the nation". The cleaning exercise commonly called set-settal, gave a new facelift to the town of Soma, due to the massive participation of the police, army, fire service, Mansakonko Area Council personnel, and the women . Addressing the crowd shortly after the exercise, Lamin Waa Juwara, the governor of the region, described the initiative as the brainchild of the Gambian leader. He expressed delight at the positive turnout of his people to the exercise, noting that it is unprecedented. He went on to stress the need for people to respond to such national calls. He added that they want to make LRR, "especially in places like Soma a green zone". We have already started planting trees and with the completion of the highway, places like Soma shall be a place that Gambians will be proud of," he said. Governor Juwara then saluted the people for the positive turn out. Ousman Jatta, the commissioner of police in LRR, described the monthly exercise as worthwhile. To him, as security personnel, this is not their first time to turn out in large numbers and that they are even ready to continue such endeavour. For his part, Wally Sanneh, the deputy governor of LRR, described the monthly cleaning exercise as justifiable, saying that the exercise is not done for anybody but for the health of the population. He equally thanked the participants for responding to the call. Author: by Salifu M. Touray in LRR | Media Actions See Also |
