Maintaining our roadsThursday, August 13, 2009 Editorial Roads are very expensive to build. The money required to construct a short stretch of road usually runs into the millions. Consequently, once roads are built, everything should be done to keep them in good condition. There is no denying that every country needs a good road network. Roads facilitate the easy movement of people and goods from one place to the other. They also link the areas of production to the available markets, thus facilitating economic growth. In view of their necessity and the astronomical figures involved in constructing them, it is wise to carry out maintenance work on our roads before they fall into a state of total disrepair . That is why we viewed with delight, the current maintenance works being carried out on such stretches as the Kairaba Avenue (around the IEC) and the Bertil Harding Highway (around the bridge). The authorities responsible for this development deserve a great deal of commendation. Bravo to them for working to maintain our roads. And to the general public, especially drivers on our roads, try to exercise patience as the ongoing works are in our interest. Let us all respect the diversion signs, when there are construction works ahead. Yes, it might cost us a few minutes of our time, but in the long run, we all stand to benefit. So let us all support the works to ensure better roads in the country. Author: Daily Observer | Media Actions |
