Major cleansing exercise held in CRR

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
The Regional Environmental Committee of the Central River Region, in collaboration with the community of Janjanbureh, last Saturday joined the rest of the country to participate in the monthly cleaning exercise known as set-setal.

Speaking shortly after the exercise, the governor of the region, Alhagie Ganyie Touray, applauded the active participation of the CRR Regional Environmental Committee, Armitage High School and the community of Janjanbureh. He further spoke at length on the importance of environmental sanitation, reiterating that a healthy community is the bedrock of any meaningful socio-economic development. Governor Touray urged his people to take the monthly set-setal seriously as it is a national event.

The chief of Janjanbureh, Bakary Jam Jawo, said a clean environment ensures a healthy community. He thanked all those who participated during the exercise. Lamin Samateh, the regional NEA inspector,  seized the opportunity to sensitise the community about the anti-littering regulations.

He all proprietors of private residential properties, shops and offices are advised to clean the entire perimeter of their fences up to the edges of the public road. He called on the general public to make the region one of the cleanest and healthiest.
